Top 10 Must Crochet Granny Squares

There are so many gorgeous crochet granny squares to be found online, in books and magazines. It is hard to know where to start! I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 must crochet granny square patterns from a few of my favorite blogs. The best part is all of the patterns are free! I am hoping that I will get a chance to try them all out, or at the very least a few that can be joined into a pillow or small throw. Several of these would go wonderfully together as long as the colors get adjusted!

10. Crochet Granny Square

This may structurally be a classic granny square pattern, but it is truly re-invented with intarsia color work. I love that Celine changed the game: it used to be you changed color for every round. But now every round has every color – brilliant! The border with the darker tone of the same color is a wonderful finishing touch.

9. Strawberry Granny Square

There are so many fruity motifs floating around the web it was hard to narrow it down to the one I want to make the most. I wound up choosing this adorable strawberry motif because it is pink and red, has a classic granny border and who doesn’t love strawberries?

8. Smiley Face Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Smile. Everything will be fine. Or so says the Vitamin C song from 1999. Anywho, I love the idea of a big smiley face motif, if not just for a throw pillow to brighten up my family room. And it looks easy enough… until that sewing for the face! I’ll still give it a try, mine just never look as good as the pictures.

7. Modern Granny Square

Confession: I don’t think I’ve ever made a granny square that features the puff stitch! And here’s the most beautiful example of one that I’ve ever seen. From a distance it looks like a mum blooming in fall… beautiful, simple and elegant. And they said it couldn’t be done!

6. Crochet Heart Granny Square

Hearts are not the easiest shape to make in crochet. Yes, there are a lot of ways to crochet them, but they don’t always look that great. Which is why I was impressed by the looks of this square from Golden Lucy Crafts. I like that the heart is the actual center of the square and not an appliqué (not my favorite look). Very excited to try this one out and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it turns out as well as their samples!

5. Crochet African Flower Granny Square

African Flower motifs have been on my list for such a long time. I see them and swoon at the beautiful shapes. But I never take time to make them! I get so frustrated with my past self! But now I have no more excuses: this pattern is free, thorough and I’m in love with the palette they used for their example pieces. All the work is done for me – now I just have to crochet! Yay!

4. Circle to Square Granny Square Tutorial

This is such a fresh change-up to the granny square! I’ve made solid granny squares before, but adding the circle in the middle and colorwork is just exciting to me! A whole blanket of simple dots, so refreshingly modern!

3. Crochet Daisy Flower Granny Square Pattern

Everything this spring has been so fabulously retro it has put me in the mood to crochet something retro! And what better than some groovy flowers? There are dozens – more like hundreds – of flower motifs out there, but I liked the simplicity of this one over at Crochet Bits. I could see a whole throw in this motif!

2. Day 36 – Festival Granny

This stunning take on a floral granny square easily puts it near the top of my must-make list. The color palette is gorgeous, but the flower construction is even more stunning. I am guessing this will be a more experienced skill level, but I am excited to try!

1. Crochet Sunburst Granny Square

Sunflowers! I love sunflowers and who doesn’t? They’re so bright and happy, always soaking up the sunshine. The sunburst pattern is always a colorful and fun motif to make, but the sunflower bumps this one right up to the top of my list!
