October Sunset Zippered Crochet Bags
October Sunset Crochet Bags
Crochet bags seem to be gaining space at retail every season. There were so many beautiful purses and sets of bags for this summer and fall! I wanted to make a set that was not only trendy but affordable. The price tags on those at retail seemed sky high to me!
Of course, being a yarn fiend, I did end up spending $24 on premium cotton yard at Michael’s. But once I saw these colors I couldn’t not get them… right? So now that I had my yarn in hand, I decided to make a mood board for the collection. Gathering reference, sketching ideas and thinking through different possibilities is one of my favorite parts of the process. Here is the final mood board from this stage – be sure to let me know what you think in the comments below!
Crochet Bag Pattern Development
I researched some of the popular sizes and wound up envisioning a three bag collection. But then I had the idea for the Rainbow Bag and couldn’t not make it! So I wound up with a Four Bag Collection. Not too far off, right?
One of the biggest issues I have always had with crochet bags is the stretch factor. Now I haven’t made a lot of crochet bags, but the ones I’ve attempted in the past have always stretched and deformed almost the instant I started using them. I ran across a set of crochet bags at T.J. Maxx and noticed that they had one side crocheted and the other side was canvas. I didn’t want to do that – I like crochet on both sides – but I liked how the canvas stiffened them up and made them feel more durable.
What I ended up using for this crochet bag collection was a double-sided lining inside a crochet exterior. The lining is a natural cotton canvas/denim with a calico print on the inside to keep things pretty! The two bigger bags even had room for an interior pocket, also included with the pattern.
Now figuring out how to sew this double sided lining hurt my brain a little bit, but I ended up figuring it out. I have included step-by-step instructions with the crochet patterns so you can have both durability and style!
The lining for my small bag turned out the best. If you follow the pattern, your interiors should look like this:
All four bags are pictured below: Large (top left), Rainbow (top right), Small (bottom left) and Medium (bottom right.
Ready To Get Started?
You’re probably wondering what all you’ll need to make this set of four crochet bags. The good news is you’ll probably only need one skein of each color yarn. Bad news is, I did end up hand sewing the crochet to the zippered lining. If you are savvy with a sewing machine, that could help. I personally couldn’t find the right settings for the thicker crochet and found it faster to hand sew.
