Chain Introduction

The chain (ch) stitch isn’t really a stitch… it is a series of loose slip knots. Chains are typically used to start a project in rows or to create chain spaces (ch-sp) when stitches are skipped. They are also used at the beginning of rows to create height and keep a project square.

Chain Step One - Yarn Over

1. Once you have a slip knot on your hook, get your hands in position. Slide the hook forward and wrap the yarn around the hook clockwise. This is called a yarn over (yo).

Pull the yarn toward the loop on the hook.

2. Now pull the yarn to the loop on the crochet hook, turning the hook slightly. This twist will make it easier to pull the yarn through the loop.

Your First Chain

3. That’s all there is to it! You’ve made one chain. More than likely you need to chain more, so repeat the above steps.

Three Chains

4. You’ll end up with a strand of chains. The above image shows three chains, ready to be worked (stitched) into!
