Chain Introduction
The chain (ch) stitch isn’t really a stitch… it is a series of loose slip knots. Chains are typically used to start a project in rows or to create chain spaces (ch-sp) when stitches are skipped. They are also used at the beginning of rows to create height and keep a project square.

1. Once you have a slip knotSlip knots are used to secure the yarn to the crochet hook when beginning a crochet project. They may also be used to secure the end on your hook, get your hands in position. Slide the hook forward and wrap the yarn around the hook clockwise. This is called a yarn over (yo).

2. Now pull the yarn to the loop on the crochet hook, turning the hook slightly. This twist will make it easier to pull the yarn through the loop.

3. That’s all there is to it! You’ve made one chain. More than likely you need to chain more, so repeat the above steps.

4. You’ll end up with a strand of chains. The above image shows three chains, ready to be worked (stitched) into!
