Holding A Crochet Hook Introduction
There are a lot of different ways to crochet! One of the big things you will have to learn is holding your crochet hook. There are two common ways that we’ll explore below, but it is important for you to adjust the hold for your long term comfort. These two grips are just a starting point.

There are dozens of ways to hold a crochet hook. Two of the most common are the knife (above left) and pencil (above right). Try out both grips and tailor to your specific needs. Don’t forget to keep your hands as comfortable as possible.
Holding A Crochet Hook: The Knife Grip

Hold the crochet hook like it is a knife (above) that you will use to cut food. This position keeps your wrist stable and uses all of your fingers to insert and twist the hook, distributing strain.

Holding A Crochet Hook: The Pencil Grip

Another popular grip is to hold your crochet hook like a pencil (above). This will allow you to use your thumb and index finger joints to make a stab and twist motion to create stitches.
